Be bold for change. That’s the theme for tomorrow’s International Women’s Day and how well that dovetails with the purpose of Women for Middle East HOPE! Our mission is to do as much as we can to effect positive change in the quality of life for women in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). As viewer responses come pouring in to SAT-7’s channels, we see that our efforts really are making a difference!
In Turkey, for example, the role of women continues to be defined by an ongoing gender equality struggle. Women continue to be discriminated against in the workplace and, in some regions, in access to education. A new women’s program called Homemade addresses many women’s issues—domestic, social, educational, and professional—presenting a sound, biblically inspired perspective on each topic and situation. Often, women in Turkey are prevented from pursuing their aspirations because they feel insecure and lack confidence. Homemade offers varied, live segments that encourage women to develop skills and interests that will boost their confidence. Topics include jewelry design and other crafts, cooking, book recommendations, local events, and theater news.

The program speaks to women who have been bold for change by completing their education and becoming doctors or lawyers or researchers. And the program speaks to women who need to be encouraged. Producer Deniz Colak says, “We want our audience to be inspired by these courageous women who stand on their own two feet despite the struggles they have faced.”

In the midst of political turmoil throughout the MENA, the SAT-7 KIDS channel targets a specific group of women—parents—who are in desperate need of support to provide stability for their children. Episodes of With Smyrna are helping women to be bold for change by teaching parenting skills from a biblical point of view and also encouraging intellectual, spiritual, and relational wellbeing that improve family relations. Segments in the first season suggested practical steps for resolving day-to-day parenting issues. The second season, scheduled to air this spring, will cover trauma-related topics particularly relevant to women affected by the conflicts in the region.

SAT-7 programs and Women for Middle East HOPE offer many encouraging words on the subject of change. And so does the Word of God.

This quote from the Old Testament clearly affirms that we can BE BOLD FOR CHANGE… because of the One who wants to accompany us on our journey!

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
